The Photography of Shi Guangzhi

Shi Guangzhi is well known for his photographs of flowers. What is fascinating about the series "Flowers Are Not Flowers"is the method of multiple exposures that Shi Guangzhi employs without the use of digital computer manipulation. The series is both original and very technical. In his later series "Cool Breeze and Shadowy Bamboo", he continues to use this skill of multiple exposures. Layers of images combine movement with stillness and sharpness with softness. The bamboo is puzzling, elegant and even glamorous. The visual effects are unique and purely photographic, his works neither painting-like nor easily recreated. Shi Guangzhi photography belongs to the category of fine art photography.
Due to its ease of imitation and mechanical nature, photography differentiates itself from other forms of art. Thus, photographs not easily imitated are surely works of art. Shi Guangzhi has shown us that photographic works must achieve a harmony between creativity and technique.
