The kingdom of bicycles

Wang Wenlan

In China, wherever there are people, there are bicycles.
The ripples of wonder when the last Chinese emperor went for a ride on two wheels in the

Forbidden City have long since disappeared by the endless streams of wheels in the bicycle

kingdom.
The bicycle is still an indispensable "member" of the Chinese family. In most households
nearly everyone has a bicycle. There are over 500 million bicycles in China, one for every

two or three persons. Nowadays, the "Little Emperor", the only child in each Chinese family,

grows up on the extra seat tied to the bicycle. Bicycles are much like cells that permeate

every corner of the musculature of the Chinese social body.
During rush hours, countless bicycles pour out of hundreds of thousands of small lanes. The

flowing traffic of bicycles makes a series of magnificent, long dragon formations, as they circle and cross the various overpasses in the cities. This mobile "Great Wall" is a marvelous spectacle that cannot be observed anywhere else in the world. When you are in the midst of it, you feel like you are the blood in the veins of society, lively and vigorous,

sensing endless potential. Bicycles thus seem to have souls, pulses, and breath.
To me, riding my bicycle is a source of enjoyment. With great ease, I ride it on the streets
and alleys when conducting interviews. I also take photographs of bicycles, which carry stories of families, love, happiness and sorrow. And my bicycle rides me as well; every day after work, I carry it all the way up to my apartment on the fourth floor.
