Zhu Xianmin was born in Pucheng, Shandong Province in 1943 and studied photography at Changchun Film Studio in 1963. He worked at the Jilin Pictorial as press photographer in 1968 and is now the senior editor at China Art Institute and the vice president of China Photographers Association. He receives a special allowance granted by the State Council to artists.
1978-2005 Taught at more than ten colleges and universities including Central Academy of Arts & Design, Beijing Film Academy, Shenyang Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, Tianjin Academy of Arts and Design, Liaoning Normal University, Chinese People's Public Security University, and China Press Photography College; 1985 Held the Zhu Xiarnin Exhibition at Beijing National Museurn of China, and organized tour show in Jinan, Zhengzhou, Changchun, Dalian, and Taipei; 1987 The Works of Chinese Photographer Zhu Xianmin published by People's Fine Arts Publishing House won the prize at Leipzig Book Fair in 1989 and international master ;Henry Cartier-Bresson encouraged him to "focus on life with a pair of honest eyes"; 1988 Director of Photography Institute at China Art Institute, founder, president and editor-in-chief of the magazine Photo China; Apr. 1988 On the invitation of the State General Administration of Press and Publication and People's Fine Arts Publishing House, visited the Russia as one of the First Chinese photographers; published a picture album on Russia; sent to Russian government as a national gift and won the Bronze Prize of the 1st National Book Award; 1991 Two works of Chinese People along the Yellow River and People Living on Prairie were jointly published by Modern Press and a publishing house in Taiwan; Apr. 1992 Held a photo exhibition in Taipei; Aug. 1993 Photo exhibition in Tokyo; praised by Japanese Photographers Association as the "realistic master"; 1994 The program Oriental Son Zhu Xianmin produced by and broadcasted at CCTV won the Silver Prize awarded by State Ministry of Radio, Film and TV; Oct. 1995 Held a photo exhibition in San Francisco, US; May 1996 Photo work of Restless was published by Culture and Arts Press; May 1996 Twenty photos were collected by a German art museum: Aug. 1997 "Chinese Living along the Yellow River" was published by Culture and Arts Press; Sept. 1998 "Ordinary People along the Yellow River" was published by Zhaohua Press; 1998 TV program "Photographer Zhu Xianmin" was broadcasted in US and China and won the First Prize of the 4th Golden Bridge Award granted jointly by Press Office of the State Council and the State Ministry of Radio, Film and TV; Oct. 1999 "Ordinary People along the Yellow River" won the Excellent Award on the 5th National Book Fair organized by the State General Administration of Press and Publication; Apr. 2000 Held a landscape photo exhibition in Beijing; Nov. 2001 Held a photo exhibition at the Beijing International Art Garden Museum, photo of Ordinary People Living along the Yellow River; exhibited at the Pingyao Festival; 2002 Held a photo exhibition in Paris; photo of a Guizhou lanscape was exhibited at the Duyun Photography Art Festival; 2003 Photo of Into Nepal exhibited at the Pingyao International Photography Festival;Works exhibited at the Galerie Municipal du Chateau d'Eau in Paris; 2004 Was invited as senior advisor by the US Photographers' Association Held themed show on "Restlessness" at the Wuyishan International Photography Week; 2005 Photos were published by Workers Press; CCTV produced and broadcasted Zhu Xianmin on its program "People".Jan. 2006 Exhibition "Beijing, 1980's", Epson Gallery, Beijing Book "Beijing, 1980's", published by Espon China.
